On August 28, 2016, Tim Bergling, better known as Avicii, graced the stage at Ushuaïa nightclub in Ibiza for what would be his final performance. He had previously hinted at struggles with mental health and exhaustion from his grueling tour schedule, and this show marked the end of his career.
Recently, the video of that final performance has been uploaded to his YouTube channel. In it, the talented Swedish DJ can be seen playing his hit track “Addicted To You” from his debut album “True.” The club-goers at Ushüaia Ibiza were oblivious to the fact that this would be their last dance with Avicii. The video has already garnered over 159,000 views just eight days after being uploaded.
Avicii leaves the stage
Avicii took his own life in 2018, leaving behind a legacy of international hits such as “HeyBrother“, “Levels“, “Wake Me Up“, and “Addictedto You“. Despite his untimely passing, his music continues to live on. In 2010, he was even ranked among the top 100 DJs in the world by DJmag.
On April 20, 2018, the news of Avicii’s death shocked his fans and it was only then that they realized the significance of his final performance in Ibiza.
The environmental foundations IbizaPreservation and Bye Bye Plastictogether with the Sustainable Transformation Laboratory (Ma) team, met with the Ibiza Leisure Association to present a proposal for the elimination of plastic water bottles in their premises
In a statement, IbizaPreservation recalled yesterday that they have transferred to representatives of the main discotheques and beach clubs a citizen petition that they launched at the beginning of the summer season and that has already gathered nearly 700 signatures
These two foundations explain that they have “joined forces to ask Ibiza’s nightclubs associated with Ocio de Ibiza to be an example to follow globally and reduce their plastic footprint with three concrete measures to be implemented for next season”, such as “stop serving water in plastic or brik containers, offer more sustainable alternatives that comply with the waste law and work with organizations that promote sustainability to integrate circular models that eliminate single-use products”
IbizaPreservation wants water fountains to be installed in these locations in preparation for the 2023 openings
The Ibiza Leisure Association has committed, they point out, to assess the proposal, while stressing that most of the associates already work on reducing the plastic footprint in their establishments
The manager of the association, José Luis Benítezsaid, according to these two foundations, that their stores have been working for years to reduce single-use plastics and replace them with other recyclable or reusable materials that have a lower environmental impact. “There are even some stores that are already 100 percent plastic free”
Benítez also recalled that “it is not easy” to dispense entirely with plastic water bottles because the supplying companies do not offer it in other containers
From IbizaPreservation they have already announced that, at the very least, they will try to have water fountains installed in these premises for the opening parties in 2023. “Ibiza nightclubs set trends around the world and we believe they have the power to lead a global change in the music industry and also at the level of sustainability,” they insisted in their statement
The iconic ‘beach club’ Bora Bora, located in the Platja d’en Bossa area, opened its doors yesterday for the last time, although it will not close until the early hours of tomorrow morning, true to its style.
The venue has chosen to say goodbye to its 40 years of history with an uninterrupted 40-hour party
The closing party is divided into two events, as announced by the club on its website.
Marking the end of an incredible season, Afterlife is taking over Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza with a day-to-night Closing Party on Thursday, September 29th. Tale of Us will headline two sets in the final event of his sensational Afterlife residency, along with Dixon, Paul Kalkbrenner, Ben Klock b2b Marcel Dettmann, Kobosil, Stephan Bodzin and a hoard of others.
The Tale Of Us’s explosive Afterlife has been at the heart of Ibiza’s most cutting-edge music scene this summer, hosting the best of the best from the house and techno worlds. Full house crowds enjoyed artful soundtracks and hypnotic production providing an immersive experience like no other techno party on Ibiza.
The Afterlife Closing Party will take place at both Hï Ibiza and sister venue Ushuaïa Ibiza for the first time, making it Afterlife’s most spectacular closing in history. It all takes off at 5pm at Ushuaïa Ibiza’s notorios poolside stage, providing a one of a kind open-air dance experience together with the club’s incredible production. Afterlife creators and techno innovators Tale Of Us will be joined by renowned live techno pioneers Paul Kalkbrenner and Stephan Bodzin, together with the Italian couple Fideles.
At midnight, the party moves to Hï Ibiza, with three rooms packed with action to choose from. The imposing Hï Ibiza Theatre offers an unmissible large-scale experience as Tale Of Us returns for the last time after an awesome summer with their Afterlife residency. The head of Innervisions lable Dixon also make an appearance, along with the melodic maestros from Italy, Mind Against, bridging the gap between IDM, house and techno.
The Club Room offers an intimate techno session with Berghain resident Kobosil and the epic pairing of Ben Klock b2b Marcel Dettmann who bring a rolling and punchy techno funk, as well as KAS:ST and Brazil’s ANNA. Not to mention the vibrant and colorful atmosphere of Hï Ibiza’s Wild Corner, one of Ibiza’s most infamous party spots, soundtracked by the classic house sounds of Argy, hybrid techno from Kevin De Vries and more from Konstantin Sibold and Ubbah.
AFTERLIFE – TALE OF US
Under the iconic Afterlife symbol above the dancefloor, expect a mesmerizing visual experience with tailor-made lighting installations along with the renowned sound design and engineering. The end of the Afterlife season is on the horizon, but there’s still time to create musical memories to last a lifetime with this duel event.
January had just begun and José Luis Benítez , manager of Ocio de Ibiza, the group of the main discotheques on the island, told this newspaper that they would surely bring forward their openings to April. Neither the president of Palladium, Abel Matutes, took it seriously. But on the weekend of April 29 to May 1, several opened in a chain. Thousands of tourists attended that historic opening, the earliest in recent history: “And a success,” Benítez points out now, almost five months later. So much so that the disks are already asking themselves the following question: What if we were to do it again in 2023?
The season “has been spectacular, very good. All the venues have already managed to match the numbers of 2019”, admits the manager of Ocio de Ibiza, who considers that one of the secrets of this success, in addition to the desire to dance that their customers had, was “lengthen the season. It was a success “.
” If an experiment works, and as we always talk about trying to extend the seasons, why not repeat it”
And “a good experiment” that could be repeated in a year’s time: “We are considering opening again soon in 2023, we are studying it because it has worked. It is still too early to know what we will do, however. We have to check if the dates of Easter suit us [in 2023 it will fall from Sunday, April 2 to Sunday, April 9, seven days earlier than in 2022]. But if an experiment works, and as we always talk about trying to lengthen the seasons, why not repeat it. It would be positive. But we have to look at the calendar,” explains Benítez.
Easter Week 2022 (which was held in the second week of April) went great for tourism interests: “After those holidays, there were seven days of stoppage and then the openings began,” he recalls. “That added to the fact that entrepreneurs were eager to get the machinery up and running again.”
It remains to be seen whether this desire will continue in 2023, especially after this long and exhausting summer. Almost all the discotheques opened their doors that distant month of April, hence in some they begin to wish that this eternal season ends: “I don’t know to what extent it is getting long for us because of the amount of people who have come and because of the heat it has been. All that ends up exhausting you. We are looking forward to stopping in October and taking stock”.
More expensive tickets
What is clear, warns Benítez, is that although this year has been fabulous, it has not been so much as “to recover what was lost in 2020 and 2021. There were those who thought that, since we were doing so well, maybe we would make up for those two bad seasons. That will no longer be possible, there are losses”. The manager explains that it is difficult for them to surpass the records of years like 2019 because they have “limited growth, there comes a time when there is no more”. Perhaps there is, he points out, some improvement compared to three seasons ago because they will work more than usual, as the season has lengthened: “But if you compare identical periods of both years, we are equal”.
He admits that, yes, ticket prices “have gone up in some cases”, because having “the best djs in the world in Ibiza every week costs money. It also costs them more to come, so the tickets have increased a little, around 5% and 10% in some venues”.
Regarding their staff, they have had no problems to fill them: “Our sector is well paid. And the workers have an important extra, the tips. That’s why they tend to be very loyal and keep coming back. Few stores have had problems in this regard this year.” Even the security staff was increased: “The reason is that we didn’t know what would happen with the pandemic, there was some uncertainty. We didn’t know how people would behave in a room full of people”.
The closures, which will begin shortly, “will not last beyond October”. “Now,” he adds, “the cascading closings begin, which will end in the second and third week of that month. He foresees “a few less” customers than in the openings: “We depend on the weather. People are booking less in advance now.”
The family of Scottish DJ Jamie Roy has announced through a Facebook post that the young died last Tuesday night , although no further details have been released.
